- Description:
- The Boykin Spaniel was developed in South Carolina as a small turkey and duck dog that could hunt from a swamp boat. It is the state dog of South Carolina. The AKC lists the breed in Miscellaneous in this database; the UKC classes it as a Gun Dog.
- Temperament:
- Boykins are typically eager, people-oriented, and happiest when they have water or birds to work. They are usually good family dogs if they get enough exercise. A bored Boykin will find a swamp, a shoe, or both.
- Training:
- They take well to retrieving work. Keep training upbeat and start water work early.
- Care & Grooming:
- Brush the wavy coat weekly and dry the ears after swimming. Check pads after work in cypress and palmetto.

- Boykin Spaniels may develop hip dysplasia, eye problems, and exercise-induced collapse in some lines. Ask breeders about hip, eye, and EIC testing.
