- Description:
- The Broholmer is a Danish mastiff that watched manors and droved cattle. The breed nearly disappeared and was rebuilt in the late 20th century from remaining farm dogs. The UKC classes it as a Guardian Dog.
- Temperament:
- This is a calm, confident guardian. It is typically friendly with its own household and reserved with strangers. It is too large and too serious for a small apartment or a first-time owner who wants a soft pet.
- Training:
- Socialize early and keep the rules clear. A Broholmer that is allowed to lean on people becomes hard to live with.
- Care & Grooming:
- Brush weekly, more often when the undercoat blows. Grow puppies slowly and do not run them hard on slick floors.
- Shedding:
- Moderate; heavier seasonally.
- Health:
- As with other giant mastiffs, hip dysplasia and bloat can occur. Do not exercise hard right after meals.
