- Description:
- The Dutch Smoushond was the gentleman’s ratter and coach dog in the Netherlands. The breed nearly disappeared and was rebuilt from remaining wire-coated yellow dogs. The UKC classes it as a Terrier.
- Temperament:
- Smoushonden are typically cheerful, people-oriented, and less fiery than many terriers. They still hunt vermin if given the chance. They are usually good house dogs when they get a daily walk.
- Training:
- They learn quickly and respond to upbeat, consistent sessions. Socialize them with other dogs while they are young.
- Care & Grooming:
- Brush the wiry coat weekly and strip or trim it a few times a year. Keep the beard clean.
- Shedding:
- Low to moderate.
- Health:
- The breed is generally hardy. Patellar luxation can occur in small terrier-type dogs; keep the dog lean.
