- Description:
- The German Spaniel, or Deutscher Wachtelhund, is a German flushing and tracking spaniel used on birds and to follow wounded game. It is still mainly a hunter’s dog. The UKC classes it as a Gun Dog.
- Temperament:
- These spaniels are typically friendly with their hunter, determined in cover, and too busy for a quiet lap-dog life. They need work and a chance to use their nose.
- Training:
- Start retrieving and tracking early. They learn quickly when the work makes sense.
- Care & Grooming:
- Brush the thick coat weekly and dry the ears after work in wet cover.
- Shedding:
- Moderate.
- Health:
- The breed is generally hardy. Ear infections and hip dysplasia can occur; keep the dog lean.
