- Description:
- The German Wirehaired Pointer, or Deutsch Drahthaar, is a versatile German gundog used to point, retrieve, and track on land and in water. The AKC places it in the Sporting Group; the UKC classes it as a Gun Dog.
- Temperament:
- These pointers are typically loyal to their handler, reserved with strangers, and serious about work. They need more exercise than a casual companion of the same size. A bored wirehair will invent its own hunts.
- Training:
- Be consistent and start bird and water work early. They think in the field and do not enjoy pointless drill.
- Care & Grooming:
- Brush the harsh coat weekly and strip it a few times a year. Dry the ears after swimming.
- Shedding:
- Low to moderate.
- Health:
- German Wirehaired Pointers may develop hip dysplasia, ear infections, and von Willebrand disease in some lines. Ask breeders about hip and blood-clotting tests.
