- Description:
- The Italian Hound, or Segugio Italiano, is Italy’s native scenthound, used on hare and wild boar. Smooth and wire varieties are the same breed in most registries. The UKC classes it as a Scenthound.
- Temperament:
- These hounds are typically gentle at home and determined on a track. They have a carrying voice and will follow a scent out of an unfenced yard. They need more running than a short walk.
- Training:
- Train the recall early and use a long line.
- Care & Grooming:
- Wipe the short coat, or brush the wire coat weekly. Clean the long ears after work.
- Shedding:
- Low to moderate.
- Health:
- The breed is generally hardy. Ear infections are the issue most often seen after field work.

- 11–13 years
