- Description:
- The Kishu, or Kishu Ken, is a hunting dog from the Kishu region of Japan, used on boar and deer. The AKC lists the breed in FSS; the UKC classes it as a Northern Breed.
- Temperament:
- Kishu are typically quiet, loyal to their household, and reserved with strangers. They have a strong prey drive and need more work than a short walk. They are not a busy-street companion breed.
- Training:
- Be consistent and start socialization early. They think for themselves in cover.
- Care & Grooming:
- Brush weekly, more often when the undercoat blows.
- Shedding:
- Seasonal and moderate to heavy.
- Health:
- The breed is generally hardy. Hip dysplasia and allergies can occur; keep the dog lean.

- 11–13 years
