The Leonberger is a giant, rectangular working dog with a lion-colored double coat, a black mask, and a well-feathered tail.  The head is broad, and the outline is that of a powerful water and draft dog.
Height:
Male: 28–31½ inches; Female: 25½–29½ inches
Weight:
Male: 120–170 pounds; Female: 100–135 pounds
Color(s):
Lion yellow, golden to red-brown, with a black mask; a small white star may appear
Coat:
Medium-soft to coarse double coat, longer on the ruff and britches
Description:
The Leonberger was created in Leonberg, Germany, in the 19th century as a large companion and working dog.  Newfoundland, Saint Bernard, and other heavy breeds went into the mix.  The AKC lists the breed in Miscellaneous in this database; the UKC classes it as a Guardian Dog.
Temperament:
Leos are typically gentle with their household, watchful rather than sharp, and fond of water.  They are still giant dogs and need training and space.  They do poorly in heat.
Training:
Start early and keep sessions calm.  Socialize this large, friendly dog so it does not bowl people over.
Care & Grooming:
Brush the heavy coat several times a week, daily when the undercoat blows.  Grow puppies slowly.
Shedding:
Seasonal and heavy.
Health:
Leonbergers may develop hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, and an inherited polyneuropathy.  Ask breeders about joint and nerve testing.
Lifespan:
8–10 years
Litter Size:
6–10 puppies
