The Poitevin is a large, lean pack hound with a long head, long dropped ears, and a short tricolor coat. The outline is that of a fast French running hound, built for all-day work on wolf in earlier centuries and on deer later.

Description:: The Poitevin is a French pack hound from Poitou, created to hunt wolf and later used on deer and other large game. The UKC classes it as a Scenthound.
Temperament:: These hounds are typically good-natured with their pack and determined on a scent. They have a carrying voice and need more running than a short walk. They are not quiet apartment dogs.
Training:: Train the recall early and use a long line.
Care & Grooming:: Wipe the short coat and clean the long ears after work.
Shedding:: Low to moderate.
Health:: The breed is generally hardy. Ear infections and pad injuries are the common working-dog issues.
Lifespan:: 10–12 years
Litter Size:: 4–8 puppies
