The Pyrenean Shepherd is a small-to-medium herding dog that comes in a rough (long) coat and a smooth-faced coat. The ears are semi-prick, the tail may be long or a natural bob, and the outline is lean and weather-beaten.

Description:: The Pyrenean Shepherd, or Berger des Pyrenees, is the small herding dog of the French Pyrenees. It worked in front of the flock while the Great Pyrenees watched from the edge. The AKC lists the breed in Miscellaneous in this database; the UKC classes it as a Herding Dog.
Temperament:: These shepherds are typically intense, loyal, and tied to their handler. They can be reserved with strangers and may try to herd children or other pets. They need a job.
Training:: They learn at speed and get bored with repetition. Start herding or sport work early.
Care & Grooming:: Brush the rough coat several times a week. The smooth-faced variety is easier to keep tidy.
Shedding:: Moderate.
Health:: Pyrenean Shepherds may develop hip dysplasia and eye disease in some lines. Ask breeders about testing.
Lifespan:: 15–17 years
